Joe Palca beat me to it.
For months, the NPR Science correspondent has been reporting on how vaccines will bend the curve and impact the spread of coronavirus across the United States and the world. This week, on Weekend Edition Saturday, he reported on his experience in becoming a data point – that is, getting vaccinated.

Meanwhile, for months, I have been thinking about how vaccines might affect my life and the life of my family and friends. I’ve been thinking about it a lot, even more than why the English pronunciation of the letter “w” is “double-u,” while the French say “double-v.” (Because really, it is two v’s, right?)
Anyway, this week, I became a data point. And despite Joe Palca’s work, I’m going to write about it, too.
As I wrote last week, I’m one of the four million New Yorkers who became eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine last Sunday morning, as a result of a medical condition and some immune-suppressing medication I’ve been on for years.
But after reading the stories about how the registration process has confused or vexed many New Yorkers, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I logged on, promptly at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday. It turned out to be a totally easy and straightforward process, much like trying to buy Paul McCartney concert tickets a few years ago:
- Immediately getting into the system, getting halfway through registering for a mid-March slot in Potsdam, only to have the website crash and kick me out.
- Getting back on, waiting in the queue for an hour, only to find the next available slot was at the end of March in Plattsburgh (sure, I’ll drive two hours!) and registering for it.
- Logging back on in the afternoon, finding a slot a few days later in Potsdam, registering for it, and then cancelling my Plattsburgh appointment.
- Finding a pharmacy in the North Country that had an appointment open on Wednesday and registering for it, only to be called back and informed they were only doing vaccines for ages 65 and up, so my appointment was cancelled. Considering whether the fake ID industry is evolving from creating pretend 21-year-olds to creating pretend 66-year-olds.
- Deciding a March 26th appointment was better than nothing and resigning myself to double-masking, or maybe quadruple-masking, or wearing a phone book on my face, for another month.
- Logging on to the state website on Tuesday and immediately finding an open appointment in Potsdam on Thursday afternoon.
So I took that appointment. And it turns out that the reward for surviving the past 11 bewildering months and the bewildering registration experience, was a vaccination process that was anything but bewildering. A vaccination site at SUNY Potsdam that was extremely well-marked, spacious, professional and courteously run. A process that was choreographed to a tee, and a shot that was essentially painless.
If the scientific data is accurate, my body has only built up a small amount of immunity so far, but I am looking forward to the point where everyone who’s reading this can visit a center with such a positive payoff at the end. The Paul McCartney concert is just a bonus, especially if he plays “Paperback Writer.”

Big Shot is an RTG powered online slot using the 5 reel, 20 line format. It has a flashy Hollywood theme with symbols such as awards, superstars and actors. It also has a relatively unique free spin bonus where you can get win multipliers as high as 20 times and also has a Random Jackpot link.
Maximum bet is one coin per line and the max bet limits are 20¢, 40¢, $1, $2, $5, $10, $20 and $100 so you should be able to find a bet level that suits you. You can of course play less than max bet but with the range of coin sizes it is probably better to choose a lower coin size than play less than all lines.
The superstar symbol is wild but only appears on reels 2, 3 and 4. The highest paying symbol is the actress. Get five actress symbols and you win a nice 2,500 coin jackpot. Second highest line pay is 1,000 coins for the five cars. The scattered award symbols pay up to 2,000 coins for five scatters.
The Big Shot symbols only appears on the 1st and 5th reel. To win the free spins you need to get both on the screen at the same time. Once hit you are awarded a random amount of free spins between 5 and 20 free games. The big twist is that the multiplier always equals the free game number.
For example on the first free spin the multiplier is 1, on the second it is 2 and so on. If you manage to win 20 free games the last free spin will have a huge 20 times multiplier. This makes the free spins really interesting as the longer they go the higher the possible rewards. The max free games is 20.
Top jackpot on the free games is a big 50,000 coins if you manage to get the five actress symbols. To make hitting the jackpot on the free games a little easier the Big Shot symbols becomes wild during the free games. This means that you can get five wilds but this simply pays the top 2,500 coin pay.
It is always great to see something a little different from your standard free spin feature. This increasing wild bonus was first seen online with Cleopatra II and is starting to become a bit more common.
